Ages ago I had an Atari 800XL home computer. Viva la 6502. One of the programs I had played a song called "Passionately" while displaying the lyrics, karaoke style. It was pretty cool at the time, but our coolness threshold with computers was a lot lower then.
Problem: I can't get that song out of my head today. It's even worst because I can half-remember the lyrics. The song is basically about someone who has been abandoned, and is waiting for their lover to phone. Now you are gone, and time just seems to drag on. Without your love, I could not live for too long.
All the while, a set of bars on the screen show the notes being played, including bends and vibrato. You have to admit, you and I fit... Passionately.
Grrr. Not being able to find a real copy of the lyrics keeps this song preserved in half-memory. Number was dialed wrong. For you I still long passionately.

Thank you, d w Dance! I remembered the tune so clearly, but some of the lyrics had been forgotten or muddled. You've made my day!
ReplyDeleteThe strange thing about the song is that, at the time, I assumed it was an old song. It just had an "old timey" feel to it. I was a little surprised to see the song credited to "Elly Pirely." I had thought Gary Gilbertson had written it, based on the interview here.
Thanks again!
I saw that interview just before I stumbled upon your blog. I think that whoever screwed with the file probably changed the name as well as some of the words (you and I fit
ReplyDeletePassionately/you and I SHIT
Passionately). Puerile to say the least.
I managed to download an emulator and tons of files ages ago, and of all the things I most wanted to see/hear again - Passionately was at the top of the list (mainly because the buggar was stuck in my head and I couldn't remember the words either) along with Starraiders
My father was obsessed with this song when I was a kid, he played it a lot, and I have to admit, I loved it too. It's amazing to finally track down what exactly it is that I've had stuck in my head for twenty or so years!
ReplyDeleteI still find myself humming this song as I work around the house (I found this page off a Google search for it). Anyone know where I can get the Midi file?
ReplyDeleteI _LOVE_ that song! So much so, that I made a midi file of it. Check it out at http://sirreel.hopto.org/midi.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I double-checked my original copy (Yes, I can still boot up my Atari 800) and can confirm that the song was composed and copyrighted 1983 by Gary Gilbertson. The Advanced Music Processor v6.2 was copyrighted 1983 by Philip Price.
ReplyDelete@SirReel: Thanks for verifying that! Also, your mp3 is chicken-fried awesome!
